...Bolognese history

History factoids of the bolognese

"A few breeds are able to supply a well-documented history that is difficult to challenge.
Unfortunately, the history of today's Bichon Bolognese is not the definitive, bichon bichon
but rather a composite of fact & fiction, legend & conjecture
that often lacks specific dates and poetic descriptions by the literary giants of antiquity.
There is one fact, however, upon which all sources agree.
In the past, there was a small coated dog, often white, an ancestor of which existed before Christ.
From the original "small dog" a number of varieties evolved,
brought about by the ongoing exploration and eventual isolation that forced each to reproduce his own kind or gene pool."

Brief synopsis

The origin of the name Bolognese: bichon The breed is also known as the Bichon Bolognese, Bolognese and Bolognais as well as Bolognase (the latter two are often mistakenly used though they both are in truth a dish and not a reference to the breed). The breed was once called `The Italian bichon of Bologna` after a province in Italy called Bologna. From where the name was since adopted from to its` present name the Bolognese. It is nevertheless also known as Bichon Bolognais, Bolognais, Bolognese . The Bolognese belonges to the bichon group along with the Maltese and Bichon Frisè. It`s origins however are not found in Italy but instead you have to go back in history all the way to the Mediterranean area.
The bolognese was first used on boats as mousers but it`s value rose during the time of the Roman Empire and finally to it`s present place during the Renaissance. As then the bolognese was a valued gift among the noble. "… the Bolognese is the most princely gift that could be offered to an Emperor." Said The King of Spain (1556-1598) who thanked the Duke of Este after he had offered the king two bolognese as gifts. The three bichon breeds were named as the `ladies dog`. For It travelled through Europe in the laps of the noble women giving warmth and delight.
The Bolognese breed (or similar looking) dog was recognized in the 1200th when for example the two painters, Titian and Goya, potrayed this unselfish and noble dog in their artwork. This is how our Bolognese came all the way to the far ends of Russia where it was greatly appreciated by Catherine II, The Great. With the decline of the Aristocracy, its close bond with it, risked to mark its extinction.

In general

The Bolognese is a smart little dog though it isn`t usually very rambunctios or boisterous, but it is in every way a lively and happy little dog. It`s balance is very good and it is eager to please so it suites very well for agility. It doesn`t bark too much but it does warn if needed. It tends to bond with one specific person in the family very strongly and follows them around the house as if waiting to be of help or waiting for a treat to fall. It is a great companion who will give you affection and recieve it if you don`t mind the grooming. A Bolognese is usually a quite healthy dog. If used for breeding it`s always recommended to get the dogs eyes and knees checked. bichon
